I have the exact same issue, but I havent gotten it to the diagnostic mode.
Still trying different flash drives, and trying rufus.
I can get it to "booting from external usb" but t seems to hang there, or some drives it will go back to booting then fails.

MacRob, please replace the initrd.gz and kernel on the USB key with these:

Thanks, but still no luck. I tried manually copying the files to the flash drives after usbrecovery (format+install) is done. Then used rufus to format, usbrecovery to install, then manually copy.
Then I put files in x86 folder and let usbrecovery install after formatting with each option.
Then I deleted all of these files, redownloaded and tried all again (thought maybe something was corrupt)
They all still hang at "booting from external usb".
