RN516 Drive expansion not syncing the drive

FWIW, the HCL hasn't been updated in a long time. I recommend ignoring it, and getting either an enterprise-class drive, or a CMR NAS-purposed drive (WD Red Plus or Seagate Ironwolf). That said, HGST drives are enterprise class, and have a very good reputation - so they should work fine.
Possibilities include
- that the drive is defective
- that the drive wasn't blank, and just needed to be formatted in the NAS.
I suggest testing the drive in a PC using WD's lifeguard utility. You'll need to connect the drive either with SATA or a usb adapter dock.
You could also download the full log zip, and look in there for clues.

One problem, all of my computers are MACs 😂
I do have an enclosure I could test it with but I am not sure what software to use on the mac to check the drives. Do you have any advice?
Also, if it checks out, can I format just that drive on the NAS by highlighting and clicking format on the right of the screen?

Unfortunately none of my computers are Macs.
An alternative is to use ssh to get into the NAS, and then run the long smart test using smartctl. Have you ever used ssh?

You could try that, yes.
