If you open "computer", and then single-click on the USB drive (so you don't navigate into the drive), you will see the format at the bottom of the windows. For instance, "File system: NTFS".

You need to disconnect the USB drive via the Web UI before you physically pull the USB cable. See "manage a USB device" on page 24 of the manual here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ ... 6Dec11.pdf
