You will have to remove the Heatsink and Fan which I think is built together by removing the screws or if there are locking pins on it. The thermal paste needs to be loosened from the heat sink and the installed CPU so you might need to give it some twist.
You should be able to see the processor after that. You will have to unlock the pin and replace.

Just to be clear, the question I'm asking is how to remove the CPU and heatsink safely from the machine so I can replace it. I would also note that I believe I have the first revision of the ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition (2008 model), not the 2010 model.
I'm also new to the O/S (Linux), so if there are steps that I must do there, specifics and direction would really be helpful. I have enabled SSH but haven't used it much and don't really know how to edit files. I believe it may be required to raise the minimum fan RPM to a higher value to keep system heat below the warning levels.

Thanks Marc -- helps to know. I guess it's like I thought it was, but it's good to validate it with someone knowledgeable before using too much force. I'll give it a try.
