Rsync backup (ReadyNAS Pro 6 to ReadyNAS 316) failing right after start

I have an older ReadyNAS Pro 6 that up until recently I was backing up via rsync to a Synology DiskStation, until that unit crapped out the other day.

I've replaced the Synology with a ReadyNAS 316, and have attempted to re-establish the same rsync backup that I had successfully been running before.

I'm running CIFS as the File Protocol on the Pro 6, and SMB on the new 316.

The 316 has been freshly configured, and I've enabled rsync on both the unit and the Share.The 316 has only an admin account on it, no other users.

Backup configuration:

Over on the Pro 6 via FrontView (where I have my Backup Jobs configured), I've changed the destination to a Share on the new 316.

After the requisite fiddling with the Host and Path names to get the syntax that Frontview requires, I finally got a successful result from the Test Connection button and assumed the rsync backup would begin working from that point.

Although Frontview "accepted" my settings, when I go to run the rynsc backup, it reports the job is "Starting" (great!), and then "In Progress" (even better!), but then a moment later aborts with a "Failed" message (log below).

The basic format of my backup settings are (in Frontview):

STEP 1: Select backup source (my older Pro 6):

Share: Movies-2

STEP 2: Select backup destination (my new 316):

Remote: Rsync server

Host: Backup-2

Path: Movies-2 (a Share I created on the 316, which from what I can tell actually lives in /data/Movies-2, but Frontview does not accept that as a valid Path)

Login: admin / admin password

___ Tunnel Rsync over SSH (no)

___ Enable compression (no)

_X_ Remove deleted files on target (yes)

___ Enable FAT32 compatibility mode (no)

----

Here's the output log from the failed backup:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INCREMENTAL Backup started. Tue Aug  9 20:55:06 PDT 2016

Job: 001
Protocol: rsync
Source: [Movies-2]/
Destination: Backup-2::Movies-2

sending incremental file list
rsync: read error: Connection reset by peer (104)
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(764) [sender=3.0.9]

Backup failed. Tue Aug  9 20:55:30 PDT 2016.

Reason for failure:
Error encountered copying data from source path /Movies-2/ ==> Backup-2::Movies-2 due to unknown reason.  Please see log.

Help appreciated, thanks.

    The first thing to try is using the IP address instead of the hostname.  You might also try running the backup job on the RN316 (my own rsync backup jobs run on OS 6 destination NAS, with the source being my Pro-6).

    This is actually the same as the pro.  Data is the volume name, but the destination is the share.  Your pro source share "lives" in /c/Movies-2, but you generally don't access it that way.

  • thinksinc,

    Could you check on 316 side using SSH command:

    cat /etc/rsyncd.conf

    and share [Movies-2] section?

    The section looks like

    [Movies-2]
      path = /data/Movies-2
      comment =
      use chroot = true
      uid = root
      gid = root
      read only = false
