Rsync or relicate
Hi. I am going to make a backup between two ReadyNases (RN102 and RN214) over wan. I am a bit uncertain if I should use Rsync or replicate. What are the pros and cons of Rsync and replicate? ...
Replicate uses ReadyCloud VPN technology (Remote) to connect. Netgear doesn't provide enough information on Remote to compare its security to rsync over ssh. That said, rsync over ssh should be quite secure.
Replicate is easier to set up. Rsync over ssh doesn't depend on cloud services.
I recently asked the same question of myself, and decided to use rsync. For complete backups, I couldn't find any reason that "replicate" was somehow better than rsync.
The advantage of rsync (for me) was that it isn't dependent on some cloud service. The "cloud" service may or may not work tomorrow, or netgear might decide to start charging for it, or perhaps connectivity between my NAS devices and that cloud service won't work at some critical time. Of course, with all the news stories of data breaches these days, I'm also seriously paranoid about putting ANYTHING on "the cloud" (even if it might only seem like a backup schedule.)

If your NAS units are just going to be connected to one same LAN then RSYNC would be enough. ReadyNAS Replicate is mostly used for backup of ReadyNAS units that are not on the same LAN.
ReadyNAS Replicate depends on a server on the Internet that needs you to register your ReadyNAS units and login with a ReadyCloud/Remote account while RSYNC does not. ReadyNAS Replicate is not for free on legacy units but free on all ReadyNAS OS6 units, so you can always use it if you want.
