Rsync over ssh fails due to unknown reason

Hi,

I just bought a ReadyNAS Ultra 2 that I would like to use as a source for rsync over ssh to my Synology DS212j (soon to be off-site) but I can't get the SSH part to work. I have also bought the addon EnableRsyncSsh to enable the ssh-checkbox under backup.

To begin with I have managed to get the rsync with ssh to work with my Windows 7 computer and Synology DS212j and I have managed to get the rsync to work without the ssh option pushed by the ReadyNAS into the Synology. Therefore I am guessing that I have missed something in my ReadyNAS settings. The log that I am able to find is:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INCREMENTAL Backup started. Tue Aug 14 07:54:32 CEST 2012

Job: 001
Protocol: rsync
Source: [Rsync]/
Destination: 192.168.0.198:/var/services/NetBackup

ssh: connect to host 192.168.0.198 port 22: No route to host
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at io.c(605) [sender=3.0.9]

Backup failed. Tue Aug 14 07:54:35 CEST 2012.

Reason for failure:
Error encountered copying data from source path /Rsync/ ==> 192.168.0.198:/var/services/NetBackup due to unknown reason. Please see log.

I am a newbie when it comes to these types of questions so all progress that I have made so far is by using guides I have found online. Any inputs would be greatly appreciated! :)

(and I know that ssh probably will run slow on the ultra 2, but I don't mind)

Best regards
Alex

  • Thanks for the very fast reply!

Yes I have followed that guide, the only part I am not able to do is to "test the connection" because it always fails (it does so even when I use the rsync without ssh, even though that works when I apply the settings and make a test).

I also think that the Synology needs the rsync destination to be placed in a specific folder (NetBackup for regular rsync and /var/services/NetBackup for the one over ssh) atleast that is how I managed to get it to work with DeltaCopy on Windows 7 to SYnology.

Edit: I think my key files are setup correct now, because earlier I got an error message stating that something was wrong with the key. I don't get that error anymore...
