I don't believe any version of SBS/LMS logs the filename of a file it encounters issues with. I haven't changed the Scanner logging setting to be "Debug" though, so I suppose it's possible that it might do that in that logging mode. But if you DO do that, make sure to change it back or the log file will probably get to be rather large in size.
As for it becoming a "Media Server", they called it that because they added DLNA support (which works with many devices, but not everything) and thus the ability to send pictures and video to DLNA-capable devices. This was done primarily for their Logitech Revue boxes, but the primary focus of the software is definitely still music files and Squeezebox support.
