You can make shares that are private. Making folders within a share that are private is generally a frustrating path.
Start with the permissions guide here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/23169/~/what-access-right-options-can-i-configure-on-my-readynas-os-6-storage-system%3F
It is also possible to hide the share (but it can still be made visible if you use the right file explorer options).
On the remote access question - I'd suggest OpenVPN for this. Netgear Nighthawk routers have built-in VPN support. There is also an OpenVPN app for the ReadyNAS, but it is a bit trickier to set up. You'd need to open a VPN connection to your home network (either from a PC or a mobile device), and then you have full access to your home LAN. ReadyCloud is another option.

Thanks for the info, i will give the permissions guide a read. while i was waiting, i decided to make a shared folder, so now i have:
Videos:
- gopro final
- workouts
Videos-Privaite:
- gopro raw
i figured that might be best.
yeah, i think readyclould might be easiest. i guess i would be able to create an account for her and she could login in from any computer to access the gopro final folder. i guess i will have to read that permissions article to figure out how to give her permissions.
