Wipeout - thanks! Loading the beta (t28) firmware fixed the problem. After loading the new "allow anonymous access" checkbox was already ticked on all shares, and no login box.
Now on to trying to figure out the backup software that won't access a perfectly accessible share!
It really shouldnt be as hard as it is to get this box to work the way it should.
