Slow Speed Through Readynas Remote

Hi, i am quite noob to the readynas duo but am getting round things slowly, basically I wanted to set up and share a drive with my friend next door for music, films etc like an old school collaborative folder,so have succesfully set up a share using readynas remote but here is the thing, it is really slow, it said 13 hours on his end to transfer a 1.5 gig file, is this normal?? and could anyone recommend any alternatives to me,as i just want a single folder where we can both dump films music etc, any help would be great as I have been battling scouring this forum on how to even get remote up and running properly, it would have been helpful of Netgear to update their remote software automatically as I have been stuck for a long time on even getting it to connect and see my remote share grrrrr, anyway I do like the NAS but could just do with a major speed boost, could anyone help me please, both myself and my friend are on the same isp, we both have a 8 meg connection, and I have set the MTU on the readynas to 1432, thanks in advance for any help

BTW hi to everyone and thanks for making this a great forum, you have all helped me heaps with your collective input

  • 1.5GB over 13 hours is about .2564Mbps or 256Kbps.

Are you trying to share with your friend by having him pull from the shared folder via the internet? Or, did you share your wireless connection with him?

If you are sharing via internet, you are limited by your Internet Service Providers upload limit and your friend's ISP's download limit. (Go to http://www.speedtest.net to check). 256Kbps is a pretty standard upload speed limit from many broadband ISPs. I only have 512Kbps upload on a good day through Suddenlink cable.

If you are sharing via a wireless connection, then you'll be limited to the wireless transmission rate, reception quality, etc.

Does your ISP require an MTU of less than 1500? Check out TCP Optimizer (http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php). It has a nifty tool that will check for the best MTU for your application (look under the MTU/Latency tab) by pinging other websites.
  • Appreciate you getting back to me yes my upload is also around 512kbps although sometimes hits 712kbps, maybe I am expecting a little too much from the unit. To answer your question no we are not sharing our wireless although we both are on the same ISP, I would never share wireless anyways, no I have just set up two hidden shares on my nas got one visible folder with guest access enabled, many thanks again for the link to tweak my mtu settings, I am also considering turning off encryption as a test to see if it makes any difference, I understand though that by doing this I am transmitting unsecured data, bummer

By default the Remote firewall (don't need this) and encryption (a good idea to use this) are enabled. There are some overheads.
  • ReadyNAS Remote software isn't slow, your friends internet upload speed is slow

You have a valid point as they are on the same upload as me which is 768kbps, (which is quite pants but ok for copper) so yea i'm with you on that but I was just wondering if I could tweak to maximise performance, anyone had any luck with changing MTU from default 1500 to 1432 ?
