What firmware are you running on the RN316?
Can you test with wired ethernet?
On WiFi, are you connecting to the C3200 on 5 Ghz or 2.4?
FWIW, based on the specs, I don't think you will get better single-user speeds with the new router. You could get more throughput with multiple clients though.

How do I setup multiple clients? No network expert to say the least.
Your Airport Extreme should be AC1300, the TP Link is AC1300 on each ot the two 5 Ghz bands. But your PC can only use one of these bands at a time.
Multiple clients: A PC, your phone, a tablet, etc all accessing the NAS at the same time. SmartConnect would allow some of these devices to connect on band-1, the others to connect to band-2. That would increase throughput if they were all using the WiFi at the same time.
You could try connecting to the tp-link on channel 44 instead of channel 100, and see if that helps.
Strange, rebooted my mac, and now seems faster on TP-LINK.
