I'm a bit confused how Netgear support works. Ive had this NAS for a few years now, am i missing something or do i have to pay extra for support ? All i can see is complimentary for 90 days after purchase, or "premium support".
Complimentary 90 day support, after that you can either purchase an extended support contract or per-incident support. support.netgear.com is confusing, perhaps try my.netgear.com, then access "my support", and choose "get help with my netgear product".
Warranty is different (and would be the "replace my defective netgear product" path).

I dont do backups of the data on the NAS, never have....
I dont have the hard drive space in other places to move everything off and do a format either.
You do realize that you will lose your data at some point? RAID is not enough to keep your data safe, the only way I know of that works is to maintain backups.

I'm aware RAID is not completely safe. The majority of the data is media readily available via other sources so im not fussed about backups on the small chance that it fails. Also how am i going to back up 10tb of data ? i would end up buying another NAS and 4x 4tb hard drives, and probably have the same snapshot problem....
Thats disapointing that they dont at least offer ticket support, i already bought their product...

It's hard to say what the MTBF is, my guess is that it is perhaps 5 years between failures. It could be as long as 10, but I'd be very surprised if its more than that.
You might find that it is harder to get back your media than you think.
And (though I don't work for Netgear) I am thinking they might well recommend a factory reset in your case.

I actually do use other NAS. You can also use cloud (CrashPlan costs about $60/year for unlimited backup, as does amazon cloud drive). An 8 TB archival USB drive is $230 and might be a good choice for backing up media that mostly doesn't change.
