Promoted Snapshots
I am running an RN526X with firmware 6.6.1. After a lot of help from this community I got the snapshots working correctly. My system takes a daily snapshot of all of the shares (except the Home folders). I have these set up as Smart Snapshots so the system basically handles everything itself. This has been working fine since about 1/16/17 so I now have about 15 snapshot folders in each share.
It was my understanding that at the end of each week, the daily snapshots would be promoted to a single weekly snapshot (and the daily snapshots would be deleted), and then the weekly snapshots would be promoted to a monthly snapshot (and the weekly snapshots would be deleted), so that at the end of the month, you were left with only one snapshot in the folder.
Below is a screen shot taken a few minutes ago of one of my Shares.
As you can see, the system has started to take daily snapshots for the new month c_2017_02_01_00_00_09, but did not promote any of the January snapshots into a single folder.
Am I misunderstanding how thi sis supposed to work or is there something wrong? Has anyone else gotten the snapshots to combine automatically?
Regards,
David

How do I know which are daily, weekly and monthly?
They are all the same. One of the daily snapshots isn't deleted (becoming the weekly one), and one of the weekly ones isn't deleted (becoming the monthly).

Any other ideas?
Perhaps manually prune the really one ones, and wait about a week to see if the February snapshots are pruned. The processing might not clean up old missed snapshots.
You could easily switch to custom snapshots - there is no thinning, but there is a setting to prevent needless snapshots (when there are no changes to the share contents). You can limit total retention, which is something that you can't do with the smart snapshots.

Is the system powered down at night?

The snapshots occurr at midnight and the system powers down at 1:00 am.

You should be ok then, so I am a bit puzzled. Do you have disk spindown enabled? If so, maybe try disabling it from 12-1 am.
Personally I use custom snapshots, so I can limit retention.
