SOLVED: NAS V2 password setup error

Hi. I'm new to NAS and so sorry in advance if this has been asked a thousand times before but I can't make sense of what I have found so far.

I have a ReadyNAS Duo V2 (5.3.5) I have gone through the wizard and set up a username and password the last page of the setup asks me to hit the 'activate' button... then I get a pop up ('control panel') that asks for username/password and it wont accept either the old or new password/username combo. I'm on a mac (10.8.3) and the netgear readyNAS is attached via ethernet and I have it set to automatic DHCP.

anyone know whats gone wrong? thanks!

Could it be asking for the admin password? That would be user=admin, pass=password.
  • Hi. thanks for your reply. yes I have tried using the default password/username with no luck... it works the first time at the start of the wizard but by the end I've assigned a new username and password and these do not seem to stick.

Do you have data on this unit? If not, could you try a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything). If your NAS has an internet connection it should update to 5.3.7 automatically.
  • it does have data on it... and yeah it does have net connection, will try updating to 5.3.7 tonight and see if that helps. cheers.
  • i really am a noob i could not figure out how to update to 5.3.7 i downloaded it but didn't know what to do with after that. little help pls? thx.

You can't update the firmware if you don't have access to the Dashboard or don't do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything).

There was a problem with the encrypted password for the "admin" user in /etc/shadow. Replacing it with the default encrypted password resolved the problem.
