Stop ReadyNAS snapshots showing as previous versions in Windows
I've always taken daily snapshots of a share, but have left "Allow Snapshot Access" unchecked in the GUI, and this has until recently prevented previous versions showing in Windows. My practice has been to check "Allow Snapshot Access" temporarily when needed, then click to "Apply" the setting, thus showing previous versions in Windows, then immediately turn off the access again (it's too risky for my users to see the snapshots, as they may use them unadvisedly; certainly, they all have write access on the share anyway, so can and do delete things accidentally, but snapshot access is an extra risk I don't need to take), hiding previous versions again in Windows.
I'm on firmware 6.6.0, and this firmware or perhaps the previous one seems to have broken this functionality, so that previous versions always show in Windows, regardless of whether I've checked to "Allow Snapshot Access" in the GUI. I've tried applying and re-applying the settings, restarting the NAS and the PCs concerned, but nothing seems to make a difference - the previous versions always now show in Windows.
Any assistance much appreciated, thank you.
Looking more closely - if you select "Custom Snapshots" 6.6 has separated the controls for "allow snapshot access" and "allow access to Windows previous versions"
Custom snapshots should work for you (since you can set an empty schedule).

Are you talking about your users accessing the snapshot as a folder, or right-clicking a file and seeing the previous versions?

Thanks - I'm talking about them right-clicking and seeing the previous versions, and prefer that they can't. Right-clicking on folders or files lets them see the previous versions, and either, particularly folders, could be very dangerous.

So I see this also (and always have).
I've always assumed that the right-click feature couldn't be turned off - though there was an issue with it not working with Windows 10 for a while. And that the "allow snapshot access" was only needed if you wanted to snapshots to show up when browsing with file explorer.
The knowledge base article disagrees with me though - http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29821/~/readynas-os-6%3A-snapshots-and-windows-previous-versions-integration
Not sure the kb article is correct though - I will follow-up.
