The Playstation 3 does not support mkv container format. What TVersity did from your laptop was transcode the mkv files on the fly to a different container (like avi or mp4) and then stream it to your playstation. This means that none of the "direct" ways (SMB, AFP, NVS, DLNA) will work.
I know that for the x86 models, there is a Playstation 3 Media Server add-on and I think you can also use Plex. I do not know if there are any solutions for the ARM models yet.
