Suddenly my NAS appears to be read only?
Hi,
For some reason I am suddenly unable to use my device as "normal". Normal being I map a drive letter (M) on my Windows machine to \\IP\media\video using the account "admin". This allows me to edit, delete and create files. Now however, I cannot do any of this.
Device: ReadyNAS NV+ (RND4000)
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.10
Symptoms:
- Viewing the "owner" column in explorer, shows some folders owned by "Unix user\root" and some by "Unix user\1005".
- Trying to rename any folder gives the error: "The action can't be completed because the folder or file is open in another program."
- Trying to rename any file gives the error: "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from Unix User\root to make changes to this file" (or Unix User\1005).
- Trying to create a new folder gives the error: "Destination Folder Access Denied. You need permission to perform this action".
- Deleting a file will show it as deleted in explorer, but if I refresh the Window it reappears (so it obviously wasn't deleted).
Tried fixes:
- Rebooting the device(!) a few times.
- Mapping to \\IP\c as admin and attempting to edit / delete files.
- Through the admin interface: CIFS share > Advanced options > and ticking/applying "set ownership and permission for existing files and folders...". The share folder owner is admin, the share folder group is admin. Share folder owner and group rights are "read/write" and the share folder everyone rights is "read/write" also.
- Through the admin interface: Ticking "Grant rename and delete privileges to non-owner of files".
My understanding was that mapping/connecting as admin gave full root access. I do not have any "special" configuration for this device really. The only user that exists is admin (although this doesn't display in "security > users & group accounts). Security mode is set to user (I used to have users a long time ago).

I am having the exact same problem right now on my ReadyNAS Pro 4. Yesterday I had write permissions, today, I only have read.
I have only noticed these problems after updating the firmware to the RAIDiator 4.2.22 - OOM-9NETGEAR ExpertYou can open a support case if you are needing a faster response.
The resetting the permissions you have done in the troubleshooting step; Did that help the issue temporarily?
(If so) There is an option under CIFS; "Advanced CIFS Options", you can check these two options to make sure the permissions don't get funky after writing/editing files/folders.
(If that step didn't work) - What are the users/groups set in the "Advanced Options" tab?
I would suggest setting it to "nobody"/"nogroup"; resetting the permissions to see if that helps.
The admin user is a different user as the root user, but has similar access properties from the share side. (Since you can't login with root from most of the share options.)- userxyzTutor
I've had this problem about 5 times over the lifetime of my ReadyNas RND4000. I'm suffering it again and this time I'm unable to fix it.
Under Advanced Options for CIFS, I've tried setting the "share folder owner" to admin, to nobody, and to another user account. None of these work, and it always reverts to nobody for the share folder owner, and nogroup for the share folder group. Obviously I'm selecting "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings". Windows Explorer continues shows "Unix User\Root" as the owner.
[edit]: I deleted an old share which the web interface first told me that it would be deleted in the background, and then confirmed the operation. Rebooted the NAS box. It has reappeared in the share listings. What??

Rebooting the NAS box and repeating the actions of setting permissions appears to have worked this time. It's as if the entire NAS box functionality was in read only mode previously, despite the web interface confirming every operation.
