Teaming / Trunking / Bonding - Is it worth bothering

I've just got a Pro 6, and I am very happy with it. All it used for it media storage, and to backup two PC's. Nothing taxing at all, and in hindsight, the Ultra 6 would have done.

I have a netgear GS724T smart switch (24 port gigabit) on it's way (http://www.netgear.com.au/business/products/switches/smart-switches/GS724T.aspx), which has support for it.

So then is it worth setting up teaming? More to the point is there any disadvantage in having it? I already own a spare cable, so there is no money to be spent. And which mode would you recommend?

Thanks.

when you are accessing the PRO from multiple clients, then teaming will improve overall throughput. Not sure exactly how much though. It won't help at all if you are only accessing the PRO from one device.

It's quite easy to do, and I haven't had any trouble with it. If you disconnect one of the cables (for instance), it fails over to normal ethernet.

I have the PRO set to 802.3ad LACP layer 2+3.

On the GS724T I set up a lag group named PRO which has the 2 switch ports as members and has LAG type LACP.
  • Thanks. I'll give it a go. I do access it from 2 devices at once sometimes, but one is via wireless g, so it's not sucking up a lot of the gigabit bandwidth, but I won't turn down a little extra free speed. And redundancy is nice too.
