Time Machine & Lion
Not happy together as far as I can tell

You're getting that error because you're not using the supported way of doing TM backups. You'll either need to edit the AFP config for that share or change to using the supported method. See http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=55166
