The version of the AFP/Time Machine support in OS6 is newer than what we have in legacy OSes.
We don't ignore the integrity checks that Apple does to verify that backups are completed successfully.
We will move to doing Time Machine backups over SMB, but only once we can maintain the same standards we have for backups over AFP.
I see you have a Pro 2. Though not supported you can put OS6 on that unit (see OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!) and check for yourself where things are at with Time Machine backups on OS6 before committing to the purchase of a new unit, if you like.
Note: Time Machine supports multiple backup destinations. So you could backup to your Mac Server one hour and then to the NAS the next hour and then the Mac Server the next...

I have an ultra 2 plus, already running 6.8.1 but right now not a big enough drive to use it for time machine anyway. but it's not a bad idea to try it for a while in a limited way to see how it holds up
