Time Machine setup help
I have an Ultra 6 with two free bays. I am wondering if it is possible to add one (or two) drives to the spare bay/s but keep them independent from the main RAID and dedicate it/them to Time Machine ...

Are you using X-RAID2 or Flex-RAID?
Do note that SATA connectors are designed for limited pulls so this may not be a good idea.
A better idea may be to get a 2-bay NAS and backup to both NASes using Time Machine (from Mountain Lion you can select multiple backup destinations and it will rotate between available ones each hour). Then put the 2-bay NAS in a safe for security when you go on holidays.
