I'm confused by your description. Are trying to restore your Mac from a backup of your time machine? I believe you need to restore the time machine first, but maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are describing. If you are just saying the time machine will no longer connect, then recheck the password settings first. Remember it's not your normal username/pwd, it's the one in the time machine setup. Maybe they got cleared or something.
