Time Machine using OSX Mavericks

Hard to know what the deal is, but I got it to work by renaming my computer (under System Preferences -> Sharing).
Original Name: Family iMac
1st try: FamilyiMac
This failed with the same error.
2nd try: family
The backup is now progressing along. It will be a while to cover the 500+ GB that I have, but I'm a lot farther along than I was.
Perhaps there is some new problem with 10.9.1 and computer names that have spaces and/or mixed case?
