Having two NICs with different I.P.s in the same address range is not recommeneded. There are teaming methods you can use that don't require a switch that supports and is configured to use 802.3ad LACP which you could possibly use till you get a switch that supports 802.3ad LACP. Or you could run on just the one NIC as you found worked for you.
