TimeMachine Maverics works - but super slow!

I have a MacBook Pro with a 1TB drive backing up to a Ultra 2 with the os 6 legacy (latest). Both are connected to a wired 100Mbts network. What speed can I expect? It's like 5Gb/h or somehting. Any suggestions how to speed up?
Thanks :)

    Use a gigabit (1000Mbit/s) not a 100Mbit/s network

If your router is 100Mbit you could place a gigabit switch between the router and your NAS and Mac. Or you could get a new router.

Does your router have gigabit ethernet ports ?
  • Thanks for reply. I've checked it and was supprised, that my router is just 100mbts capable.. Damn it. I was wondering if it's possible to set up p2p from macbook to readynas..At least for initial backup? Could the speed be affected by any wrong settings I've made?

A 100 mbit network should be able to sustain 36 GB per hour (about 10 MB/s). On a gigabit network you should be able to get about 200 GB/hour for large file transfers with the ultra if you have enough speed in the PC to keep up. Though you won't get that with a USB 2.0 drive.

Gigabit switches are inexpensive, so that is recommended. You will need cat 5e or better cabling.

A direct connection to the Mac is certainly possible, and should improve your speeds. Set the ultra to a static IP address first (and you will of course need to do the same with the mac).

You could also try turning off any antivirus or security software on the PC.
  • Thank you very much again for the quick response! I've tried a direct wired connection. But I think it's a Problem caused by MAC. When I look up the network performance in the activity panel, there is slightly nothing.. But there is no virus scanner or anything similiar running. Internet search didn't help..Lost packages? I don't know. 500 GB Backup still running..:(

Probably let it finish (glacial though it is) and then try to sort it.
