Transfer Files From NV+ to RN204-100NES

Hi

I'm about to purchase (I think) an RN204-100NES with a single 6TB drive, the intension will be to transfer the files across from the NV+ to the RN204 keeping the NV+ as the backup until I can afford to fit a second disk. I'll then continue to add disks as required.

Simple question, what is the fatest an most reliable way to transfer the files, they are both physically connected to the same router?

Any advice much appreciated

    Hello Pete2,

There are 2 ways for you.

    1. You get a USB drive that can handle the amount of data you have stored to the disks inserted to the ReadyNAS NV+. Once you have the new ReadyNAS with its disks, copy the data from the USB drive to the volume of the inserted disks of the new ReadyNAS.

    2. Use RSYNC for backing up the data from old ReadyNAS to new ReadyNAS. I'm not certain which ReadyNAs NV+ version you have so I've included the 2 articles below. OS5 is for ReadyNAS NV+v2 that has RAIDiator 5.x while OS4 is ReadyNAS NV+v1 that has RAIDiator 4.x

How do I back up data from a RAIDiator 5 system to a ReadyNAS OS 6 system?

How do I back up data from a RAIDiator 4 system to a ReadyNAS OS 6 system?

I hope you find this response helpful.

    Regards,

I suggest getting new disks for the RN200, and using rsync to migrate the data.  I do this by creating one backup job for each share, and running them in turn.

If you are using share mode security on the NV+, then I suggest changing to user mode security first.

If you have configured users/groups on the NV+ and you want to preserve file owners, you'll need to create the same user/groups on the RN200 first, and match the UID and GID numbers.

nobody/nogroup doesn't match between the two systems, so if you have shares with those owners you might want to change the ownership to admin/admin on the NV+ before migrating (or just reset the share permissions on the RN204 after the rsync job completes).

This is not difficult to do (I have a mix of OS 4 and OS 6 systems, and I do have daily backup jobs between them).
