Transfering data to new unit

I have been using a NV+ for several years without issue, but want to upgrade to a new RN204. I will be getting new drives for the 204, my question is what is the best way to transfer the 6TB of data on the NV+ to the 204?

Just create the same shares on the 204 and drag and drop in finder (MAC)? Or creat a backup job to transfer to the new shares? I could not find a migrate or clone option on Raidiator. Suggestions?

  • Frontview and the web admin ui of the RN204 both support backup jobs.

What I suggest is creating a backup job for each share on the RN204 - using either rsync or NFS as the sharing protocol.  You create the share on the RN204, then a backup job specifying the corresponding share on the old NAS as the source, and the new RN204 share as the destination.  These jobs are run on the NAS, so the PC doesn't need to remain on while they are running.  And data stays on the wired ethernet, so there is no problem with wifi connections dropping, etc.

You might need to adjust file ownership/group ownership after the transfer. This is easily done from the web ui.

You can repurpose the NV+ to become a backup device after the migration is complete - backing up at least some RN204 shares on the old NAS, using the same approach.

Do you use the "private" home shares?

Thanks for the info, that's about what I thought. I really didn't want to use drag-n-drop as it is slow due to the data routing thru the MAC. I guess it would be best to creat all of the backup jobs and just let them run sequentially over night. I do not use 'Private' home shares at this time but may start with the new unit. The NV+ was a bit slow already.

Its easier to do the migration because you aren't using home shares.  If you were, I'd have suggested migrating them through the mac (logging in to the NV+ as  user A, copying their data to the mac, logging into the RN204 as user A, and copying the data onto the new NAS; repeating ad-nauseam)
