understanding time machine on readynas

So, I am helping my parents move from having USB drives on their three Maxs to using the readynas for all three.

I set it up with 500GB total, and he was able to get 2 machines backed up, but then the third failed because it ran out of space.

So, that confused me...

I was expecting that once it filled up that space, it basically would start pruning the oldest data.

Any ideas?

  • What are the HD capacities of the three MacBooks you are trying to backup?

Apple recommends that the size of the TM partition to be double the size of the drive it is backing up. So if, for example, you are backing up three 256GB drive you should set the time machine limit at 1.5 TB.

    Hope this is helpful!
