- NordicSpiritAspirantHello good people,
for my question, I thought I could use this stub initiated by a not too eloquent pre-poster:
I use a Duo which came with 256MB RAM.
Since memory is pretty affordable these days, I wonder what an upgrade to 1GB RAM would mean in terms of performance increase.
Are there any upgraders among you who can describe how such an upgrade really affects performance?
Thanks for your input in advance! - chirpaLuminaryTry using the forum search, many topics on this already. search.php?keywords=memory+upgrade&sf=titleonly

- wilks98AspirantHi,
I have a Duo for which I recently upgraded the RAM to 1GB from the default 250MB.
The installation process (including memory tests) was very easy and went without issue. The changes I have seen aren't massive but they were very welcome.
To put the improvements into some sort of context, here's what I use my Duo for currently:
1) Hosting a photos website
2) Streaming Videos and music to a PS3
3) General file backup
For use (1), I was able to modify the apache configuration to significantly increase the number of users and requests it could process. Making the changes had the impact of increasing the memory requirement of apache, which could now be met by the increase in RAM.
For use (2) I have seen that video playback (initial buffering) and rewind/fast-forward is significantly improved as well as video/audio synchronisation within a given video stream. Once I run these streams over a PoE connection instead of wireless I expect it to improve even more.
For use (3) I have seen little improvement, however I have not carried out any performance testing. The file transfer speeds I am seeing are more than enough so any improvement would have simply made this better.
Hope this helps
Steve - f_at_loAspirantI leave this note as future reference and potential memory upgraders:
I have two NV+ running with Radiator 4.1.8.
One, I was able to sucessfully update with 1GB RAM (Kingston KVR333X64SC25/1G, a type which was recommended in another post). Memory test was passed successfully more than 4 times. The unit is runing smoothly.
The other one will pass the memory test (so far 5 or 6 times). But now the unit hangs while booting. First the blue power-LED will start to flash more slowly, then it will freeze - either off or in any of the intermediate on stages. THe display shows "Booting". The unit still works fine with the 256MB RAM.
I guess it only shows what a gamble the memory upgrade is ... - maxblackAspirant

My 1GB RAM passed all tests with flying colors, but when I attempted a firmware upgrade on it, it failed rather miserably. I can't prove it was the 1GB that caused the upgrade to fail, but I've seen other postings here which suggest the unit may not like 1GB RAM under different circumstances.
It seems that the risk may outweigh the reward. :?
