Very slow opening and saving excel files on NAS

I have a ReadyNAS Duo hosting these shared excel work files. Only single user access to each file at any time. However, it take forever to open and save these excel (office 2011 and 2009) files. They're only 1mb in size and copying files from the NAS is not an issue. But reading these excel files takes forever.

Why?

PLease help.

  • I too have been having this problem. What makes it really strange is that it hasn't always been this way. Excel files used to work just as well as any other file type until it randomly started acting up. I've been unable to pinpoint what made it start acting this way. Also, other MS Office files work fine; only Excel files are slow to open and save on the ReadyNAS Duo. It's currently quiet a headache to copy files to a specific computer, edit the file, then put it back to make sure everything stays updated. If the OP has fixed this issue or someone else has an idea, I'd love to hear it as I'm fresh out of things to try.
  • Did anyone provide a solution to this issue? This just started happening to me today. I have a ReadyNAS NV and a ReadyNAS NV+ and both are behaving the same way. It only happens when opening Excel files. I can copy files to each NAS all day long with no trouble. I fired up Process Monitor and it appears that Excel is just reading the file *very* slowly. It does eventually open but the time is crazy...it literally takes several minutes.

Try this. It's a known issue. Posted here a few days/weeks ago.

No idea if it's relevant on MAC though.
  • I guess I should have realized that I was posting in a MAC subforum.

On my gigabit network, a 1 MB spreadsheet took 5.5 minutes to open. After I followed the steps in the article, the same spreadsheet now opens in < 1 second. :D

    Thank you! Much appreciated!
