WannaCrypt: Minimizing Exposure of backup box?

Two boxes, both running OS-6: one is "Production" and the other is "Backup".

Backup only gets written to/connected to by the Production box via whatever (can't recall the name) utility is built in to OS-6 for mirroring two boxes.

I am assuming that, since the Backup box is not linked to by any other devices on the LAN, it is immune to infection by WannaCrypt and other nasties.

That seems to leave accidentially mirroring to an already-encrypted/infected "Production" box.

Understood about snapshots, but an entire box.... with 12 TB of data,  that would get ugly recovery-wise.

The Question:

Is my best bet restricting the mirroring process to running only when I explicitly tell it to start - and, hopefully, making sure that no infection is in evidence at that time?

Snapshots if used appropriately can be a big help.

Ideally your backup storage should have more capacity than your production storage so you can keep a decent amount of snapshots should you wish.

Best practice is multiple backups with at least one off-site at all times. Even then there are no guarantees.
