Windows Sever Backup to SMB error "THe username not recognized by local computer"

I have a Server 2012 machine that's in a workgroup so no AD involved.

When I tried to create a backup schedule all goes well until I try to authenticate it says that "the User name being used for accessing the remote share folder is not recognized by the local computer"

I believe this problem can be resolved if my server was a DC and the NAS was set to authenticate using AD. But I don't want/need this

Any work around this?

Is the backup initated by the Windows server, or is the backup job running on the NAS?  Also, if the latter, is it the built-in web backup job or replicate?

Not something I've tried (I use Acronis TrueImage, which has no problem backing up to the NAS).  The faq here says you'll need AD though: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29754

You could simply follow the guide (ignoring the AD requirement, but setting up a user account on the NAS that matches the username/password you use on the server).  Then use that account on the last step - and see what happens.  But I suspect that's basically what you did.

Two other approaches that I think will work around the AD requirement:

-create an isci lun on the NAS for backup

-create a vhd on the NAS for backup

Both are conceptually equivalent - you end up with an NTFS-formatted virtual disk attached to the server either way. vhd is windows technology, so it might work out better.

Or of course use a different backup tool.
