XBMC and NV+ question.
Hi all,
I know from reading this forum that the NV+ cannot handle Plex. But can it handle XBMC?
Right now I am using the NV+ to serve up videos to my xbox 360 over DLNA. However this is not a satisfactory setup as I am having to reencode all of my 5.1 h264s to stereo for xbox 360 compatibility. In addition, I am unable to use subs without burning them in. There is no real info or metadata on movies and tv shows and no mkv support. I am hoping switching to XBMC will fix this issue.
So I am inquiring wether or not the NV+ w/ DNLA will play well with XBMC? Is it a solid combo, or is it too much for the NV+ to handle. Are there any caveats or pitfalls to be aware of? Are you using NV+ with XBMC, if so what are your thoughts.
Is there any prep work that needs to be done on the NV+ to get it ready for serving up media to XBMC.
I plan on putting it on this AppleTV3 once a jail brake comes out.
NV+ (not v2) running RAIDiator 4.1.8
Thanks

- datapusherAspirantNo one uses XBMC with NV+ that can chime in?
- I've got an XBMC machine in my lounge and another one in the bedroom.
Most of my media is H264 high definition content in Matroska (.mkv) containers.
My NV+s have been coming just fine with both machines playing content at the same time.
Mind you, everything is done over wired 1Gb ethernet. I doiubt wireless would cope.
I hope this helps.
André - XBMC does not run *on* the nv+, the nas can STORE your media files, and XBMC running on some other device (PC/appletv/whatever), can then access your media directly via SMB.

Yes I am aware that xbmc is a client that runs on another device. I know that the device serves up Dlna. However most of the posts I have seen mention browsing the media directory via smb. So one would assume that since it is Dlna complient, the readynas nv+ can serve up media to a client running xbmc. However, since I don't really see anyone mentioning using Dlna for this, I am curious if there are issues with the nv+'s ability to accomplish what m looking to do.
Can it use Dlna or is it stuck using smb. If both why is smb preferred over the other. How much metadata is lost if using smb. - datapusherAspirant

Ahh you are the one I have been looking for. I will definately use wired as I ran 1g cat 5e throughout my place. The majority of my content is h264 in an mkv container. Some mp4s and a few avis.
Do you have any experience with subs and dual audio mkvs? Does that combo work?
Are you using Dlna or Smb?
Thanks
Thanks for answering. - you have it quite backwards.
its smb for which xmbc will 'scrape' metadata for, not dlna.
in xmbc, add a source to the smb network media share (or wherever your media is stored), choose a tv or movie scraper as applicable have xbmc scan the media to its library.
You will of course need to have your media organized in matter which xbmc scan scrape if you want proper metadata.
More information regarding that can be found on the xbmc website.
as far as dlna, while the readynas can serve your media via dlna, it will not have all the extra metadata that doing it by smb and xbmc's media library will provide.
For what is worth, I have running xbmc both on an apple tv1, an appletv 2, and several pc's and laptops, all connecting to my shared media collection on readynas's via smb.
while it may have some other uses, dlna is pointless for xbmc, in my opinion. - datapusherAspirantThank you for the clarification. It was my understanding that it was upnp/dlna sent the metadata. Smb it is.
