Reviewed and abandoned? Can't be difficult to add some either whatever.local or a custom domain and allow a simple Web UI for defining A and PTR records. dnsmasq would even allow to automatically define DNS entries based on the DHCP requested host name and the IPv4 address assigned.
Similar, the routers should allow the advanced users to configure own local DNS server IP addresses, e.g. on the same LAN, so advanced security appliances can be put in place, too.
