There should be a method to send a test email alert to insure the email service is set up correctly. At page:
Advanced > Security > E-mail
The only way to test the email setup is to schedule an email send, and then wait for it to happen. This is a cumbersome design, and also adds to support load, as both the customer and tech have to hang on the phone and wait for the scheduled email time to hit.
Note that Netgear's Ready NAS OS6 already provides this test option.
