How do I create and define Modes and Rules?

i want to improve the wifi coverage at home so that the back of the house and rear garden have better wifi capability.

When I run Wifi speedtest type apps I currently get traffic rates up to 110Mb when near the router falling off to around 5-6 Mb at the back of  the house with a signal which is often intermittent as well, garden coverage is even worse. I have dual band wifi and the 2.4 gives better coverage in the house extremities but lower throughput than the 5 in areas with good coverage.

My devices are iPhones, IPads, a Macbook, apple TV and wired connections to a smart TV and a smart HiFI.

Virgin Media who provide my cable connection are promising higher traffic upgrade and possibly a more powerful wireless router later this year which may help  but the projected date is slipping month on month.

Extending using repeaters may not work very well with the brick walls and bits of metal mesh around.

Powerline extenders are likely to be problematic because we have three ring mains in the house (bungalow) and also a connected solar PV system feeding into the consumer unit.

Running an ethernet cable from the router to a separate WAP is not really an option as access to the dummy cellar is very difficult from when my router (connected to fibre cable) is located, as is access to the loft equally so.

Access around the loft to lay some ethernet cabling is reasonably good and I have multiple power sockets spread all around the loft.

The best wheeze i have come up with is to install  some sort of wireless receiver/repeater type gadget in the loft directly above the router where the wifi signal is very good to pick up the wifi signal and convert into a cable signal, then run a cable (probably 25 metres in length) around the loft to the back of the house and install another router at the end of this wire to act as a WAP, broadcasting downwards into the rooms at the back of the house and into the garden, is this likely to work?

Is there a better/more cost effective solution

  • It sounds like you're facing Wi-Fi coverage challenges, especially in the back of your house and garden. Setting up a wireless repeater in the loft to capture the strong signal and running a cable to another router as a WAP at the back could definitely improve your coverage. This DIY approach might be more cost-effective than other options given your house's layout and electrical setup. Feel free to ask if you need more advice!
