A router with a space for up to 5tb or bigger sata laptop hard drive would make it a lot easier have a network attached server without need for another device taking space. It included the newest sata standard and full function nas server all in package and since the size of hard drive is getting smaller it makes sense.
What do you think of this idea?

I meant to say the physical size of the hard drive is getting smaller it makes sense solid state hard drives work faster too.
For a size point of view it makes sense.
It does not make any sense about safety.
My critical data is store on multiple legacy NAS and offline and unpluged, lightning matter even with an APC!
I agree that from a safely stand point one local point is not a good idea an fire destroy everything and your out of luck.
A neighboor of mine got strike by a lightning, all electric equipment from pool, fridge TV were blown out 100K$ bill!
In a direct hit you can kiss your electronics good bye.
The only reason my shop was not destory by one I use a solar isolation transformer to regulate the ac mains.
imagine a 100K$ bill!! OUCH!! Only the alarm system got fried and have buzzing for 8 hours from 10 PM till 6AM!
Mother nature will have her way no matter what man tries with enough energy in lightning to burn down homes and forest any little device we think of can not win even my solar isolation transform blow a cap in million little parts but windings held. Oil filled 2000 volt caps can be hard to find.

In the past NETGEAR had offered such a solution. However, due to rapid advancement in storage, customers choose and largely prefer to use off-the-shelf NAS devices or USB storage devices that can be attached to the router directly.
