NETGEAR is aware of a growing number of phone and online scams. To learn how to stay safe click here.
Although automatic firmware updates should probably be the default, there should be a method (easily accessible in the firmware settings) to disable firmware auto-updates.
The foregoing would allow those experiencing issues with the latest firmware to remain on an earlier version.

Absolutely, right away, and easily found too, not buried 3-tiers-deep in advanced or debug screen.
netgear- you guys are human, there are releases that break things for your users. If you play god and force updates that break things, then every lost minute, every lost $ for users really is YOUR responsibility, and that will outweigh the many good things that you do.
How about an option of a three tiered system:
1) Manual Update only.
2) Auto-update to "safe" stable releases that have been in general (not Beta) release for a month or more without major issues.
3) Auto update to latest general release.
Model specific firmware-update notices should be sent to users that CLEARLY state (at intelligent, but not IT tech level) what specific feature upgrades, bugfixes, and security patches are handled by the update. If they are on Manual or Safe-auto updates, then the user can decide if there is some need to update immediately. And Auto-general update users can be on notice that an update will be rolled-out and able to look for problems or take advantage of features.

Please speak with your ReadyNAS colleagues about what a possible solution can be for stopping auto updates of the FW. Auto checking for new FW is ok when accessing the admin client, but then the final choice to upgrade - or not - lies with the admin.

This should be an option on any router. Maybe on the Advanced/Advanced Setup tab. But it should always be available on this type of appliance.

I'd maybe suggest, as a compromise, a downgrade/revert setting, which then pauses updates until the next new version comes out, effectively skipping the version you downgraded from. Perhaps even better, data on reversions can be sent to NG, so they can see quickly that many users are downgrading their firmware.
For instance:
If the current version is 2.1.4.10, but it is (hypothetically) problematic, I can go into the admin settings, tell it to downgrade, and it'll downgrade to 2.1.3.4, and then won't update to 2.1.4.10, instead "sitting out" updates until at least 2.1.4.11 comes out, at which point it goes back to applying every update until reverted again. Revert, and then the upgrade you abandoned is, effectively, invisible to the router.
This should have the ability to turn off auto updates im on orbi 2.1.4.10 in ap mode and this pice of trash breaks apples homekit makes devices unresponsive please fix asap no reason this should be a major release.

Please add this feature so those of us who have found a version that is stable in our specific environment can keep it that way.

Would like this feature added as well
This last update 2.4.0.10 has been a nightmare. And no way to reverse back to last version which was working perfectly for me. Now with this new update, a number of my home automation products, stopped working. Am I going to have to trash this router and by one from another company that works?
