Orbi to support IFTTT or Webhook on Device Connected

An enormously valuable feature of any router is knowledge of what devices are connected to the router. IFTTT presents a huge opportunity for Orbi to integrate its knowledge of connected devices to hundreds of other cloud and IoT services. Enabling Orbi to trigger when a device is detected on the network, expands Orbi's capability with everything from Security to parental control capabilities. Just look at a device like Fingbox, where its customers are willing to pay $100 for this sort of capability.  Engineering costs for supporting IFTTT probably makes it one of the most valuable bang per buck possibilities out there.

Short of full IFTTT integration and an even simpler way of exposing this cloud connected router capability would be to have Orbi support a webhook when a device connects and disconnects.

  • I agree, this would be valuable and, I imagine, not difficult to implement. There are probably many other things one can do with this, too.
  • Considering that many rival include this feature on much cheaper routers I would have thought this would be a fairly easy win for Netgear.

If I was selecting a mesh system at the moment I'm afraid to say I wouldn't have chosen an Orbi system but instead gone for the TPLink Deco M9 plus, which not only supports IFTTT but also has a smart hub built in.
