Put a spin-down for the hard drive on the nighthawk R9000

The whole reason to use Nighthawk R9000 is basically for having Plex so that you can save the cost of running a laptop or server with plex running on it. But when running with a laptop, the external hard drive that is used by Plex will spin down after not being used.

But now that I have switched to the nighthawk r9000 for plex media server (working great by the way) the major flaw is that the hard drive spins non-stop all the time now. Which wears out the drive and costs $$$ which kind of defeats the purpose of this router.

Put a spin down feature on the nighthawk R9000. I would be happy to test any new firmware related to this!

For  clarification, are you saying that there is something in the router's software that keeps the Plex Media Server from  slumbering?

What is "the external hard drive that is used by Plex"? Most of the NAS boxes I use have their own controls for drives. Is the router over ruling that?

In other words, a bit more detail might help.

Drive: Fantom 8TB G-Force3 USB 3.0 External Hard Drive

Issue: Normally the drive will spin down when not in use. When used on the Nighthawk R9000 router, it will never spin down.

Seems like the router just keeps it spinning all day every day. It may be because i use the hard drive for plex which is configured.

Anything you want me to try to help diagnose?

Has this been going on for a long time? I find that new drives that act as media servers thrash away until they have finished indexing everything on them. 8TB can hold a lot of media files.

  • Yeah I just got the router about 1 week + 4 days ago now. And it's been spinning ever since I got it. It's not still indexing. Was done within a couple hours. I don't have that much content yet.
