Routers are using newer technology with higher speeds (duh). I would really like to have DD-WRT available on a newer faster router. I have fiber to my house and would like to use DD-WRT. Support for 6ax routers would go a long way. I'll buy the hardware that supports DD WRT, so the hardware base is less important that the protocol support.

Netgear does not supply or support third party firmware with the exception of DumaOS for gaming routers.
It is down to the people who supply alternative firmware to decide which devices they work on.
