Any reason the Nighthawk Cable Modem (CM3000) should not be placed on its side?
I usually keep my modem on a shelf that does not have the space for a vertical modem. The previous one I had could be placed on the side. This Nighthawk cm3000 seems to vent heat from the top. Is there any reason laying on the side might cause it to over heat or otherwise cause any issues?

The answer to your question is yes. There are no vents on the front, back, right, or left sides. It was clearly designed to be operated in the vertical upright position.
Do you really want to risk the long term health of a $300 modem by running it laying on its side?
