No wi-fi light on router

I've had it for a while, 5 years or more . Question is: is the internet symbol light supposed to be lit?
My laptop (wireless) is constantly searching for a connection to the network. My wireless printer has been working it it also quit a couple of weeks ago also. Cell phone and kindle = no problem.
