Powerline devices are susceptible to interference. This includes gfci outlets, arc fault circuits, surge protectors, crossing circuits in a power junction box, high draw appliances, bad wiring, old wiring, distance, etc. Many things can impact its performance. In my house, powerline is pointless if the devices aren't on the same circuit. not saying yours is the same but 90mbps over powerline would be great at my place.
So its something you have to take into account when running powerline.
distance is another key, speeds drop off rapidly with distance versus how ethernet works.
I'll link to a reputable testing site's review on a couple powerline devices so you have points of reference.
