Unable to log onto NetGear account for my device

Hi,

Our router (purchased by us) was set up several years ago in our home by a boarder with

whom we are no longer in contact with.  We believe it was registered  with his email address

to his NetGear account.  We have reason to believe our home network has recently been hacked and

we would  therefore like to change all the passwords on our network, WIFI etc.   We have been stymied

in trying to do this as we can't figure out to gain access to the NetGear account under which our router was initially

registered.  Is there anything we can do at this point to gain access to the NetGear account associated with our router

(which BTW has been working fine)  or do we need to junk it and purchase a new router simply so we can register it

with our email address in order to gain access to change passwords in order to secure our network?    Your assistance and advice is much appreciated.  Thank you!
