Have interneet with modem/router, but no when plugged directly in modem

When you directly connect your pc/laptop to the modem, the isp doesn't automatically reassign the ip address if it isn't powered off.
So power off the modem (and the laptop/pc). Give it a couple minutes. Then power on the modem without a device connected to it.
Once its fully booted, then connect your pc/laptop and power it on. Give a bit to fully boot.
That should get you a connection.
In terms of the modem not having a speed test, its not a router. Its a modem only device. I've got quite a few modems (from several companies) and none of the modem only device have any speedtesting built in. Again, they're modem only device.
After some repeated tries, I determined what t @plemans advised was correct. If you plug into to the modem, reboot the modem, then your PC should be able to establish a connection. Not sure why when I first did it, it did not quite work.
Since I am here, I may as well report what I found.
The speed I can from the modem is good, as good as Comcast/Xfinity promised. It's my router. Got a Cat6 cable linking the two. There isn't anything simpler than that. Though Netgear doesn't have anything on the mode, it does have a Nighthawk app which can run a speedtest on the router itself. This is must more reliable than if I run it form a connected PC (which links through cables and switches), though at the end, it did not matter as the test results were close). The internet speed form the router is so much lower (like 40% degradation) that I have to conclude the router has a problem. It's an old router, but still capable of Gigabit, which is much higher than my paid internet service.
Why is that? No idea. I guess I should either upgrade or open a different thread.

If you have the r7000, try factory resetting it. during the install, make sure to leave qos, access control, traffic monitoring, and parental controls all disabled. Then test the wired speeds.
