How can I use the SFP/SFP+ ports on my Insight Switch?

How can I use the SFP/SFP+ ports on my Insight Switch?

So you bought a new Insight Managed Smart Cloud switch, and you'd like to use all the ports, but don't have fiber runs in your environment. What can you do?

Actually, you can use the ports with RJ45 copper Ethernet, just by inserting an SFP-to-Copper GBIC from NETGEAR! For the GC110, GC110P, GC510P, GC510PP, as well as the 2 Gigabit SFP ports on the GC728X, GC728XP, GC752X, and GC752XP, you can purchase one (or two if going to another fiber connection on another switch) AGM734 module(s)(one for each end of the connection) and then use CAT5e or better cable to connect the Insight switch to the other Insight Switch (or other Gigabit Ethernet switch). Note that you can use the AGM734 GBIC in the 10G SFP+ ports on the GC728X, GC728XP, GC752X, and GC752XP models as well for Gigabit speed connections to the other device/switch.

For the 10G SFP+ connections available on the GC728X, GC728XP, GC752X, and GC752XP models, you can use NETGEAR AXM735 GBIC(s) to connect two 10G switches (or device to the switch) using CAT6a or better copper Ethernet cabling. Of course, you can also use standard fiber connections on the SFP and SFP+ ports as well for long-distance connections between the Insight switches (or other devices with fiber connections). Check the datasheets for the specific model you have to get all of the available compatible GBICs and cables available from NETGEAR. Visit the NETGEAR Modules and Accessories page to find SFP transceivers.

For completeness, for GC110, GC110P, GC510P, and GC510PP:

AGM734-10000S -- SFP Transceiver 1000BASE-T Copper RJ45 GBIC

AGM731F-10000S -- SFP Transceiver 1000BASE-SX (Short range, multimode)

AGM732F-10000S -- SFP Transceiver 1000BASE-LX (Long range, single mode)

For GC728X, GC728XP, GC752X, and GC752XP:

AGM734-10000S -- SFP Transceiver 1000BASE-T Copper RJ45 GBIC

AXM765-10000S -- SFP+ Transceiver 10GBASE-T (SFP+ Copper RJ-45 GBIC)

AGM731F-10000S -- SFP Transceiver 1000BASE-SX (Short range, multimode)

AGM732F-10000S -- SFP Transceiver 1000BASE-LX (Long range, single mode)

AXM761-10000S -- SFP+ Transceiver 10GBASE-SR (Short range, multimode)

AXM762-10000S -- SFP+ Transceiver 10GBASE-LR (Long range, single mode)

AXM763-10000S -- SFP+ Transceiver 10GBASE-LRM (Long range, multimode)

AXM764-10000S -- SFP+ Transceiver 10GBASE-LR Lite (Long range lite, single mode)

AXC761-10000S -- SFP+ DAC CABLE (1m)

AXC763-10000S -- SFP+ DAC CABLE (3m)

Are you using direct connect cables on your switches? Let us know in the comments below.
