Ethernet Switch getting throttled

Ethernet Switch getting throttled

So i don't understand why this is happening and never had this issue on my old Asus AC3200. so i get roughly 400+mbs for virgin media in my area. now on wifi it's perfectly fine ill get near that speed all the time, but for some reason i'll get it on my desktop that is upstairs connected to the switch and on the router it states the link speed of the switch is 1000Mbits. However when someone else who is connected onto the switch turns their desktop on the link speed on the router device manager changes to 100 MBits and then we both either have latency or disconnecting from games constantly.

So i tried something 2 computers on and reset the switch, we get brief lagfree gameplay and the link speed at 1000mbits then it drops down again and the lag appears. so i thought maybe it was a switch issue, went out and changed it and got a new one (needed more ports anyway) and now i'm back to square one with the same issues. i've made sure the router was upto date and such and even tried turning off QoS that others suggested with a google search. so now i'm at a loss and i've come here for wisdom.

any help would be greatfull, i've put amazon links to both the hub and switch. Also not sure if this helps but i do have my Virgin hub 3 in router mode, not sure if that will help solve this but here goes.

Products i'm using:
XR500

Re: Ethernet Switch getting throttled

Ok, thanks for letting us know. Have never seen this kind of behavior and presume something in the switch maybe got hung up on something and needed to be power cycled and disconnected. Keep an eye on it. If it happens again, I would change out the switch for something better.

Re: Ethernet Switch getting throttled

So if i'm understanding correctly, your network layout is:

Virgin Hub > XR500 > Switch > Computers

Or is it:

Virgin Hub > Switch > XR500 > Computers

Re: Ethernet Switch getting throttled

It's virgin hub(ground floor - Modem mode) > XR500 (Ground floor - Router/WiFi) > Switch (Upstairs) > desktops and Xbox.

Re: Ethernet Switch getting throttled

Do you see same issue if you take the switch and place it near the XR router with a different patch cable and a PC connected to the switch and see if same problem happens?

Do PC speeds directly at the XR router see same problem?

Modem Combo Units:
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the NG router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem.

Re: Ethernet Switch getting throttled

Tried a different 10m cat 6/7 cables same issue, my pc has built in WiFi so checked WiFi and was getting 421mbs down and 37 up. Then on wired was getting 20mbs down and 27 up.

Tried changing cables from switch to desktops no change. This issue only occurs when more than 1 wired connection is active.

So for example when 1 pc is in use they have full internet speed and logging onto the router (XR500) the link speed shows 1000mbits, so I turn a 2nd wired connection then the speed is throttled and the router shows the switch link speed at 100mbits.

Hope that makes it more clear?

Re: Ethernet Switch getting throttled

And when these two pcs are connected directly to the XR router with out the switch being connected show the same thing?

Re: Ethernet Switch getting throttled

I've only got one cable long enough from the XR to switch upstairs, but I did try one pc on and then my pc on using the WiFi and it worked fine without the issues

Re: Ethernet Switch getting throttled

Just curious, if this switch is the possible cause of what your seeing. Need to try this with out the switch in the mix, if possible.

Re: Ethernet Switch getting throttled

As above see if without the switch it works as expected. Also are you using a managed switch? If so this might make sense as when you connect the second device its 'QoS' kicks in. If it is managed are you able to turn of the QoS on its interface?

Re: Ethernet Switch getting throttled

Its a un-managed switch so it shouldn't be causing any QoS issues.

Only other thing that could be causing problems is it does have:

  • ENERGY EFFICIENT: Designed to optimize power usage lowering its cost to operate. Most models are compliant with IEEE802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet mode.

Thought is makes NG Orbi systems problematic, I wouldnt' think it would effect and XR router. Anthing is possible.

Testing with out the switch should give results either way.

Re: Ethernet Switch getting throttled

Sorry I missed that! That could be it as there were issues long ago with modems that used energy efficient ethernet.

Re: Ethernet Switch getting throttled

Right I might sound stupid but should I keep the switch ethernet plugged in when I do this or do you mean unplug the cable from the XR to the switch to see if that ethernet cable is the issue?

I'll check the power saving thing also!

I'll put the results tomorrow 🙂

Thanks a bunch

Re: Ethernet Switch getting throttled

Remove the switch entirely from the mix. Definately test different cables after first testing with the switch fully out of the mix. If you see improvments then we can presume it's not the cabling. If you don't see improvements, cabling could be the issue.

Let us know what you find out.

Re: Ethernet Switch getting throttled

Very strange... Definately sounds like some kind of compatibility issue with the switch you're using.
