Security router xr500

Hello there came a news that malware called VPNFiter infected routers in 54 countries and some brands including netgear appears as affected.
I wonder if netgear is aware of the fact?

Thank you

  • The list of affescted routers from Netgear from the Talos list for VPNFilter malware is below, the XR500 is not on that list.

    DGN2200
    R6400
    R7000
    R8000
    WNR1000

  • Hi Gimli, I am sure they are aware but not sure about their next steps. We (Netduma) are testing our VPN Hybrid solution right now though.

Mine is in the latest version and remote management was already disabled, and as soon as I got the router for the first time already I changed the password.
Can I use it without worry, or change the router for another until I find the final solution?

      thank you

I don't know enough about the exploit (as I'm not a developer) to give you a concrete answer, hopefully Jason from Netgear will chime in.

You've done the right thing by ensuring you're on the latest firmware and having remote management disabled. Also change your interface password to a much longer and harder to guess password.

I would also recommend browsing using HTTPS exclusively. Almost all sites that handle your data will default to HTTPS. However, I would recommend installing this browser extension: https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere to ensure it happens more so than not.
